Solukhumbu facing challenges

Our project, located on the Everest Base Camp trail, tackles the urgent waste management crisis in Nepal’s Solukhumbu region, where most trash is burned or dumped openly.

Pangboche, the last inhabited village before base camp, is under growing pressure from rising tourist numbers, making local waste solutions increasingly essential.

Our solution

We are currently developing an Environmental Conservation Center in Pangboche, guided by our belief that protecting Nepal’s mountain ecosystems requires a reconnection with ancestral Tibetan Sherpa values and traditions.

To bring this vision to life, the center will include two key components: a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for waste segregation, and a Community Hall to foster local engagement and knowledge sharing.

The Material Recovery Facility (MRF)

  • A 133m² facility in Pangboche, strategic step before high-altitude base camps (Everest, Ama Dablam, Island Peak, Lobuche Peak)

  • The waste will be collected, stored, and segregated.

  • Plastic waste will be washed and shredded for recycling, while the other waste will be brought down for further treatment.

The Community Hall

  • These 120m² in the heart of the village will play a vital role in waste recycling, cultural preservation and creating community bonding.

  • During high season, we'll offer a coffee area where tourists can learn about mountain preservation, Sherpa traditions, and recycled plastic souvenirs.

  • During off season, it will provide a welcoming space for locals where they'll enjoy vocational training programs.

Construction begins soon!

After working on the project planning for more than two years, we are aiming to begin construction of the Pangboche Center this year!

We are seeking funding opportunities to support part of this project.
